How brand name numerology works
Every letter is given a number. Add them up and you get a total — the compound number — which the tradition reads on its own. Reduce that total to a single digit and you get the root number, which is governed by one of nine planets. That planet is the thread everything else is measured against: your colours, the shapes in your logo, the trade you are in, and your own name.
Two systems are in common use, and they give different answers for the same name. The calculator above runs either.
Chaldean letter values
The system used for most business naming in India. Letters are grouped by sound rather than alphabetical position, and no letter is ever given the value 9 — the tradition holds 9 apart as sacred.
Pythagorean letter values
The Western system. Walk the alphabet in order counting 1 to 9, then start again. It also keeps 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers instead of reducing them.
What each number means for a business
The root number and the planet behind it are read as the character of the business — what it will find easy and what it will have to work at.
| Number | Planet | How it reads for a business |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun | Leadership and visibility. Suits founder-led brands that want to be first and be seen. |
| 2 | Moon | Care, rhythm and partnership. Suits hospitality, wellness and service brands built on relationships. |
| 3 | Jupiter | Teaching and expansion. Suits advisory, education, finance and knowledge trades. |
| 4 | Rahu | Unorthodox and disruptive. Strong for technology and anything that breaks a category; traditionally read as volatile for consumer trust. |
| 5 | Mercury | Communication and quick turnover. Suits media, retail, trading and anything transactional. |
| 6 | Venus | Beauty, comfort and luxury. Suits jewellery, fashion, food, interiors and lifestyle. |
| 7 | Ketu | Depth, research and niche focus. Rewards specialists; traditionally read as low-visibility for mass-market brands. |

| 9 | Mars | Drive and competition. Suits sport, engineering, defence and anything physical. |
Compound numbers 10 to 52
Before the total is reduced, it is read as it stands. This is the part most free calculators skip, and it is where the actual reading lives. Totals above 52 have their digits added until they fall back into this range.

Which colours suit which number
Each colour family belongs to one or two planets. A palette is read as favourable when its planets are friendly to the planet of the name, and as working against the brand when they are hostile to it. Neutrals — black, white, grey, cream — carry a brand without committing it to any planet, which is why the calculator counts them at reduced weight.

Does your own name need to match your business name?
This is the question that comes up most. In the tradition, yes: the owner's name number and the business name number should be friendly, because the business is read as an extension of the person who signs for it. The calculator compares the two directly and tells you which of three things you have.
- The same number. Read as the closest possible match by most schools. A few caution that it doubles one quality rather than balancing it — so whatever that planet is weak at, the business will be weak at too.
- Friendly planets. Usually treated as the healthiest arrangement. The brand supports the owner without simply repeating them.
- Planets in conflict. Read as the business pulling against its owner. The traditional fixes are a small change to the brand spelling, or bringing the owner's planet into the identity through colour so the two are not left arguing.
Worth knowing: this comparison uses names only. It does not ask for a date of birth, so nothing on this page is personal data and nothing is stored.
When numerology is the wrong tool
Being straight about this is what makes the rest worth reading.
A name number will not tell you whether the name is easy to say, whether the .com is free, whether it clears a trademark search, whether it means something unfortunate in another Indian language, or whether anyone will remember it. Those are the things that actually decide whether a brand name works, and none of them are in this calculator.
What this page reports is alignment with a tradition. It is not a forecast, and nothing in it is derived from data about how businesses perform. Plenty of well-run companies carry names this calculator would mark down. Use it as one input among several — most usefully at the shortlist stage, when you have three or four names you would be happy with anyway and want a tiebreaker your family will accept.
Questions people ask
Chaldean or Pythagorean — which should I use for a business name?
Chaldean, in almost every case. It is the system used for business and brand naming across India, and it is what anyone who asks about your name number will already be assuming. Pythagorean is mainly useful for checking against a reading someone has already had done in the Western system. The two give different totals for the same name, and sometimes different planets, so pick one and stay with it.
What is a lucky number for a business name?
The tradition treats single digits as suited or unsuited to a particular trade rather than lucky or unlucky outright. A 6 under Venus reads well for jewellery, fashion and food but says little for heavy engineering, where a 9 under Mars or an 8 under Saturn is the traditional fit. The compound total matters more than the single digit: 19, 23 and 27 are read as strongly favourable whatever the sector, while 26, 29 and 43 are read as warnings.
Is 8 a bad number for a business?
No, but it is a slow one. Eight belongs to Saturn, and the traditional reading is discipline, endurance and a long horizon — a business that takes time to build and then lasts. That suits infrastructure, manufacturing, law and insurance. It reads poorly for anything that needs to be liked quickly, which is where the reputation comes from.
Do I have to change my spelling to fix the number?
Only if you want to. When the calculator finds a cautionary total it suggests single-letter changes that land on a favourable one, so the name still looks like the name. But changing spelling has real costs — domains, signage, registration, everything already printed — and if the number is the only thing wrong with your name, that is usually a poor trade. Bringing a friendly planet into the colour palette is the lighter fix the tradition also allows.
Does adding Pvt Ltd or LLP change my brand's number?
Yes, and this catches people out. The calculation runs on whatever letters you count, so the registered entity name and the trading name give different totals. The usual practice is to read the name customers actually see — what is on the signage, the packaging and the logo — and then keep that spelling identical everywhere, since a dropped space or an added suffix changes the arithmetic.
Which colours are lucky for my business name?
The ones belonging to planets friendly to your name's planet. Once the calculator gives you a number, the colour table on this page shows which families the tradition pairs with it, and the tool checks your actual hex values against it. It also flags palettes that argue with themselves — a Mars red next to a Saturn blue is a conflict in this tradition even when both are individually fine.
Is this the same as a birth chart or a muhurat reading?
No. This is name numerology and planetary colour association only. It never asks for a date of birth, a birth time or a birth place, so it cannot cast a chart and does not try to. If you want a founder's chart read or a launch date chosen, that is an astrologer's work and needs an exact birth time and place.
Is the calculator free, and is anything stored?
It is free with no signup. The whole calculation runs inside your own browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere unless you choose to have the reading emailed to you. There is no account, no tracking of what you entered, and no database holding your name or your brand's.
Getting the name right is the cheap part
The expensive part is everything that comes after it — the identity, the palette, the packaging and the way it all holds together across every surface. That is the day job at Krayon Medias.
