Per SKU, and why ranges cost less per unit
A single SKU carries the whole cost of the thinking: structure, hierarchy, claim placement, print setup. Once that system exists, applying it to a second and third variant is far quicker — which is why a range of six rarely costs six times a single pack.
As a rough shape: one SKU from ₹15,000; a range of three or more from ₹38,000; large or complex ranges quoted per project.
What changes the price
- Structure. Working to an existing dieline is cheaper than developing one.
- Number of variants. Each adds artwork, proofing and file preparation.
- Regulatory content. FSSAI nutrition and claim requirements take real time to lay out correctly.
- Languages. Multi-language packs multiply the layout work, not just the translation.
- Finishes. Foil, emboss, spot UV and metallics need separate artwork layers and printer coordination.
- Photography. Product and lifestyle imagery is usually a separate line, not part of the design fee.
What you should get for the money
- Print-ready artwork to your printer’s dieline and specification
- Working files, not just flattened PDFs
- Correct colour setup — CMYK or Pantone as the job requires
- A proofing round with the printer before the full run
- Mockups for listings and marketing
If a quote does not mention print-ready files or a printer proof, ask. Artwork that fails at plate stage costs far more than the design did.
The shelf test: can you read it from two metres?
The mistake that costs the most
Approving packaging on a screen at 100% zoom. That is not how anyone buys. Print it, stand it on a shelf, walk back two metres and see what survives — usually the brand name, one colour and one shape. Everything else is decoration you paid for.
Where cheap packaging gets expensive
Reprinting. A pack that fails on shelf, breaches a labelling requirement or does not photograph well for marketplace listings has to be redone — and the reprint costs more than the difference between a cheap designer and a good one.
Common questions
How much does packaging design cost per SKU in India?
Roughly ₹10,000 to ₹40,000 per SKU with an independent studio, depending on complexity, regulatory content and finishes. Ranges cost less per unit.
Does packaging design include printing?
No. Design produces print-ready artwork. Printing, plates and fabrication are separate and billed at actual cost.
Who is responsible for FSSAI compliance on packaging?
The brand owner. A designer should lay out the required information correctly and flag anything that looks non-compliant, but the legal responsibility sits with you.
